What we have done for all releases up to now is to announce a late beta to this list, and then release shortly after that. Usually there were only a few people interested in trying the beta (mainly people who had an important bug outstanding).

But: I'm definitely willing to change this procedure, and to use a longer, more formal, beta period. If people want that: let's discuss on this list,
