yes, it worked
I did not need to specify --with-gtk, ./configure was enough: he 
detected just gtk (not qt; apparently, I miss some package.. but it's 
ok, I use Gnome), so he set automagically the build with gtk option.

I've tested the player with some examples from ambulantplayer website 
(zip files) and it works great.
I'm going to study SMIL so I'll have the chance to test it and provide 
some feedback in the future.

Thanks for easing the building of ambulant! (I've really appreciated the 
python script for the third party packages ;-))
