This indeed got sort-of dropped by the wayside at some point, mainly  
because we thought at the time (incorrectly, as has been shown  
recently:-) that we had found another cure for the problem.

But also: I'm still not sure I fully understand your solution, and  
that it indeed solves the problem. If you think the problem still  
exists with the current code: by all means let us reopen the bug.  
phtread is apparently not our strong point:-(
